Tim Shaw Park Playground Renewal

Project Overview

The City is progressing the renewal of Tim Shaw Playground, and we’re pleased to share that a new design has now been finalised. While the design phase is complete, we’re happy to assist with any questions about the project.

Renewal works are scheduled to begin in April 2026, with construction expected to take approximately three weeks. This timing allows families to continue using the playground during the school holiday period before works commence.

Karri Forest Explorers Design

The final design is inspired by the Karri Tree Trail that connects Maidens Reserve with the Dalyellup bushland. This location is well loved by local families who enjoy the tall Karri trees, the sound of resident kookaburras and the strong sense of community in the area. The renewed playground will feature a Karri Forest themed multiplay unit that includes open‑ended climbing and sliding opportunities, an interactive sand play station, a frog tile slide puzzle panel, a florist shop counter and an aussie animal moves panel. A dedicated junior zone has also been included to support safe and engaging play for younger children.

The design encourages imaginative and social play, with a new mud kitchen that will inspire creativity such as selling treasures, communicating with friends and creating make believe shops. A variety of climbing elements offer differing levels of challenge for older children, while quieter areas provide calmer play opportunities.

A strong focus has been placed on accessible and inclusive play, with synthetic turf pathways connecting key features such as the inclusive spinning bowl, basket swing and ramp access to multiple play panels on the main structure. Shade coverage has also been prioritised, particularly over the swing set and junior play areas, to support comfortable use throughout the day.

If you have any questions about the design, you’re welcome to contact our Parks and Reserves Project Officer, Michael McCutcheon, at info@bunbury.wa.gov.au, or come along to our community pop‑up session on Friday 6 February between 7:30am and 10:00am.

The City’s Parks and Playgrounds Action Plan 2023-2033 provides a 10-year strategic framework for the provision, design and management of the City’s recreation parks and playgrounds.

The vision of the plan is to provide a diverse range of quality parks and playgrounds that meet the recreational, environmental, social, cultural and health needs of our community.

Currently, about 78 per cent of residents have access to a playground within 400m of their home while 98.3 per cent are within 800m.

Under the plan, this will increase to 83 per cent and 98.65 per cent respectively – meaning it will be easier than ever for our community to get out and play at their local park!

We know that our beautiful city has a diverse and growing community, and limited green space to create new parks. So, it’s important we ensure our existing playgrounds meet the contemporary needs of our community.
