Brighter Together - Help shape the future of Bunbury

Project Overview

Every great city has a story, and Bunbury's next chapter is waiting to be written - together.

From our vibrant waterfronts to our City Centre, Bunbury is a city of diverse voices and shared dreams. Now, as we stand at an important time to refresh our City's vision and reset our guiding strategic plan, we are reaching out to hear your story. What you love about our city, what you imagine it could become, and how we can work together on aligned priorities.

Over recent months, we've been listening to our community's ideas, aspirations and priorities shared through our MARKYT Community Scorecard 2025. We have heard passionate feedback about beautifying our city, exciting ideas for new projects and reimagining public spaces, and thoughtful comments about supporting our local economy. These conversations have started to paint a picture of tomorrow's Bunbury, but the canvas isn't complete.

This is why we're inviting you to join us in crafting our new Council Plan - the blueprint that will guide our city's future. Whether you're a young family dreaming of better playgrounds, a business owner hoping for a more dynamic City Centre, or a long-time resident with deep connections to our community's history, your story matters.

We'll be popping up at local markets, hosting relaxed drop-in sessions at community centres, and facilitating interactive workshops where you can share your ideas and help shape our city's future. Every conversation, every suggestion, and every dream shared will help us create a Council Plan that truly reflects the spirit and aspirations of our community.

Join us in writing the next chapter of this story and have your say on the new vision for Bunbury.

The City is currently undergoing an exciting transformation, including the review of its current Strategic Community Plan (SCP), a guiding community strategy, and commencing the development of a new Council Plan due to be finalised in June 2026.

We currently have a ten-year SCP, covering the period 2022 to 2032. Major reviews of these strategic plans are conducted on a four-year cycle with the City’s next major review being due in 2026. The Local Government Act also recently underwent a reform, which includes replacing the SCP with a simplified short-form Council Plan that sets high-level objectives over a 10-year period.

This new plan replaces our Strategic Community Plan and brings a more focused, flexible, and community-friendly approach to long-term planning. It’s designed to make it easier for our community to have their say and see their aspirations reflected in the City’s direction.

We’ve already heard from our residents through the community scorecard, and the priorities are clear:

  • City centre development and activation
  • Housing
  • Safety and crime prevention
  • Economic development
  • Streetscapes, trees and verges
  • Tourism and destination marketing
  • Aged care, including accommodation

Now, we’re inviting our community to help shape what comes next. From pop-ups to drop-ins and workshops across Bunbury, we’re bringing the conversation to you, so you can help create a brighter future and share your vision for the city we all call home.

Community Feedback Summary

OUR COMMUNITY'S VISION

The Community’s vision for the City of Bunbury is a place with a vibrant city centre that is safe, green, easy to get around and has a variety of offerings to attract people. It will be a City that has protected natural spaces with strong economic growth. They feel that Bunbury’s natural assets, strategic location and desirable lifestyle will help contribute to this vision for the future.

WHAT OUR COMMUNITY LOVES

  • Beaches, waterways and natural environment: Respondents have a great appreciation for the City’s diverse natural assets and easy access to its beaches, estuary, bushland, parks and wildlife. They also noted the relaxed lifestyle this environment offers.
  • Availability of urban amenities: Respondents enjoy the availability of, and easy access to, local services and amenities such as sports facilities, shopping, dining and recreation spaces. They noted the ease of living in and navigating the City, without the traffic and other challenges experienced in larger cities.
  • Location and proximity: Respondents love the strategic location of the City, being conveniently close to Perth and serving as a gateway to the wider south west region.

‘It's large enough to have a full range of services but small enough to get around them all without long journeys. It's coast and waterways are fantastic.’

WHAT THE COMMUNITY WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON

In order to achieve this vision, the community identified the following priorities for the City:

  • Addressing housing and homelessness: People want to see more availability of affordable housing options, including provision of aged care accommodation, and effective solutions to support people experiencing homelessness in the community.
  • Activating the city centre: People want to see revitalised and activated spaces in and around the CBD, with the improvement of shopping precincts, improved greening and landscapes, and the provision of events and attractions for locals and visitors, at places such as Koombana Bay.
  • Improving community infrastructure and programs: There is a desire for more inclusive and accessible community activities, social events and recreational facilities for diverse ages. The importance of maintaining and improving public infrastructure such as enhancing the foreshore, improved lighting at facilities, increased provision of parks and playgrounds, and better maintained footpaths was also highlighted.
  • Protecting and enhancing the natural environment: People expressed the need for more trees around buildings and beach areas, improved landscaping and green spaces in the CBD and within the suburbs, and the ongoing protection of the City’s natural assets. Addressing sustainability through improving recycling and adopting sustainable energy practices was also highlighted.
  • Improving transport and connectivity: People identified the need for better public transport into town, including improved bus routes in and around town, as well as improving walking and cycling paths. Creating better connections between the beach, CBD and Koombana Bay was also suggested.
  • Economic development and tourism:  There is a desire for more diverse businesses to be attracted to the CBD, with more attractions for visitors such as significant events, and improving promotion of what Bunbury has to offer. Better local provision of education and job opportunities is also a priority.

Community feedback across all engagement activities was very positive, with people expressing a strong appreciation for their local area and the initiatives being delivered by the City of Bunbury.

The community highly values the City’s natural environment, strategic location in Western Australia's South West, and the lifestyle this offers. Feedback highlights the community’s priorities for the future, to enhance the City’s liveability and establishment as a strong regional hub.
